Heureaux was shot dead on July 26, 1899 by Ramón Cáceres (Mon), Horacio Vasquez, who would reach the presidency of the Republic and the teenager Jacobo de Lara.
The night before his death, Lilís had been the subject of recognition at a banquet he offered the mocana society.
Some historical references indicate that Lilís knew of plot to kill him and the identity of those who attacked him, but ignored.
